A Norwegian fjords cruise: my route and practical advice
Opening my eyes and finding mountains rising straight from the water was the image I brought home from Norway.
The route
Four names I would look for in the itinerary.
Copenhagen can be a practical starting point, while Geiranger delivers the landscape most people imagine when they hear “Norwegian fjords”. Stavanger and Bergen add very different urban and coastal rhythms.
The order and time in port matter. A list of famous names is not enough if the calls are too short to enjoy them.
Geiranger
The view that stayed with me.
Geiranger was the moment when the scale of the fjords became real. Weather changes quickly, so layers and a waterproof outer layer are useful even when the morning begins clearly.
Before booking
Five checks that make the comparison easier.
- Exact time in each port and whether the ship tenders or docks.
- Distance from the port to the places you actually want to visit.
- What excursions are included and what remains optional.
- Cabin position if scenery from the ship matters to you.
- Flights and transfer margins on embarkation and return days.
